What Is Postpartum Formula?

Postpartum Formula is a traditional Chinese herbal formula designed to support postpartum recovery, uterine recovery, healthy lochia, postpartum circulation, uterine comfort, Blood circulation, Qi recovery, and the body's natural healing process following childbirth or abortion.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), childbirth places significant demands on the body's Qi and Blood. Following delivery or abortion, residual Blood stasis, retained placenta residue, prolonged lochia, weakened Qi, and impaired Blood circulation may interfere with the body's natural postpartum recovery. When Blood and Qi do not circulate properly, individuals may experience postpartum uterine contraction discomfort, prolonged bleeding, abdominal tenderness, delayed uterine recovery, fatigue, and reduced strength.

This empirical herbal blend is traditionally used to support the body's natural recovery following childbirth or abortion. According to traditional Chinese herbal principles, the formula works to promote healthy Blood circulation, help clear Blood stasis, support the normal passage of postpartum lochia, encourage healthy uterine recovery, relieve postpartum uterine contraction discomfort, and help restore Qi following pregnancy. It is also traditionally used to support uterine health in individuals experiencing placenta residue, postpartum bleeding, uterine fibroids, uterine enlargement (hypertrophy), and recovery following ectopic pregnancy.

Postpartum Formula is commonly chosen by individuals seeking support for postpartum healing, uterine recovery, retained placenta residue, postpartum lochia, abdominal discomfort after childbirth, postpartum Blood stasis, postpartum circulation, and overall recovery during the weeks following childbirth or abortion. Traditionally, the formula also supports healthy Qi to help restore strength, promote normal uterine positioning after labor, encourage healthy Blood flow, and assist the body in regaining balance after pregnancy.*

Suggested Combination for Enhanced Postpartum Recovery

For individuals recovering after childbirth or abortion, Postpartum Formula is commonly paired with Blood & Stamina and Spleen Support for more comprehensive postpartum recovery support.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, childbirth commonly results in both Blood deficiency and Qi deficiency, while residual Blood stasis may remain within the uterus during the postpartum period. While Postpartum Formula is traditionally used to promote healthy Blood circulation, help clear Blood stasis, support healthy lochia, and encourage uterine recovery, Blood & Stamina is traditionally used to nourish Blood, replenish Qi, and restore the body's strength and vitality after childbirth. Spleen Support is traditionally used to strengthen Spleen and Stomach Qi, improve digestion, support nutrient absorption, and help the body efficiently produce new Qi and Blood needed for postpartum healing.

Together, these formulas provide a balanced approach by supporting healthy uterine recovery, improving Blood circulation, replenishing Qi and Blood, strengthening digestion, promoting energy production, and helping restore the body's natural balance throughout the postpartum recovery period. This combination is commonly chosen by individuals seeking comprehensive support following childbirth, abortion, prolonged postpartum recovery, Blood deficiency, fatigue, digestive weakness, and overall postpartum wellness.*

Diet and Lifestyle Tips for Postpartum Recovery

According to traditional Chinese herbal principles, healthy postpartum recovery depends on restoring Qi and Blood, supporting healthy circulation, strengthening the Spleen and digestive system, and helping the body eliminate residual postpartum stagnation. Proper nourishment, adequate rest, and warm foods are traditionally considered essential for rebuilding strength after childbirth.

For best results:

  • Eat regular, nourishing meals on a consistent schedule
  • Prioritize warm, freshly prepared foods and soups to support digestion and recovery
  • Stay well hydrated by drinking warm or lukewarm water throughout the day
  • Get adequate sleep and allow plenty of time for rest and recovery
  • Engage in light walking or gentle movement as appropriate to support healthy circulation
  • Keep the abdomen and lower body warm, especially during the postpartum period
  • Manage stress and avoid excessive physical exertion while the body is healing
  • Eat meals early in the day whenever possible, ideally around 7 AM, 12 PM, and 5 PM
  • Aim to be in bed before 10:30 PM and prioritize restful sleep between 11 PM and 7 AM

To support healthy postpartum recovery, it is recommended to limit:

  • Cold or iced beverages
  • Raw or uncooked foods such as salads and sushi
  • Greasy, deep-fried, or heavily processed foods
  • Excessively spicy, pungent, or heavily seasoned foods such as curries, kimchi, and barbecue
  • Excessively salty foods and processed snack foods
  • Shrimp, shellfish, and other foods that may not be suitable during recovery according to traditional dietary principles
  • Chocolate, coffee, and excessive caffeine
  • Alcohol and smoking

Foods traditionally considered supportive for postpartum recovery include warm soups, bone broth, cooked vegetables, rice, dates, lean proteins, ginger, and other nourishing foods that help replenish Qi, Blood, and overall vitality.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the postpartum period is considered an important time to restore the body's internal balance. Supporting healthy digestion allows the Spleen to produce Qi and Blood, while healthy circulation helps the body recover naturally after childbirth.

Consistent nutrition, adequate rest, healthy digestion, gentle movement, and proper postpartum care are important foundations for supporting recovery, restoring strength, promoting healthy circulation, and maintaining long-term wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Postpartum Formula used for?

Postpartum Formula is traditionally used in Chinese herbal practice to support the body's natural recovery after childbirth. It is commonly used by individuals seeking support for postpartum recovery, retained placenta residue, healthy uterine cleansing, postpartum lochia, Blood nourishment, Qi replenishment, healthy circulation, energy restoration, and overall postpartum wellness.

How does Traditional Chinese Medicine view postpartum recovery?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), childbirth places significant demands on the body's Qi and Blood. After delivery, the body naturally works to eliminate residual Blood and tissue while rebuilding strength and restoring balance. Traditional herbal formulas are commonly used to support uterine recovery, nourish Blood, replenish Qi, and promote healthy postpartum healing.

What is placenta residue in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, retained placenta residue is viewed as a form of Blood Stasis or residual postpartum material remaining within the uterus after childbirth. When Blood and residual tissue are not completely expelled, circulation may become impaired, delaying the body's natural postpartum recovery process.

Who may benefit from Postpartum Formula?

Individuals recovering after childbirth who are seeking support for healthy uterine recovery, postpartum cleansing, retained placenta residue, postpartum lochia, Blood nourishment, Qi recovery, healthy circulation, and overall postpartum wellness may choose Postpartum Formula as part of their recovery routine.

Can Postpartum Formula support postpartum uterine recovery?

Traditional Chinese herbal formulas have historically been used to support the body's natural postpartum recovery process. Postpartum Formula is commonly selected by individuals seeking support for healthy uterine cleansing, normal postpartum discharge (lochia), circulation, Blood nourishment, and overall postpartum wellness.

Can Postpartum Formula support healthy postpartum lochia?

Many individuals choose Postpartum Formula to support the body's natural postpartum cleansing process. Traditional Chinese Medicine places importance on healthy circulation and the proper elimination of postpartum lochia as part of normal recovery after childbirth.

Why is Blood circulation important after childbirth?

Healthy circulation helps deliver oxygen and nourishment throughout the body while supporting the natural postpartum recovery process. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, restoring the smooth circulation of Blood and Qi is considered an important part of supporting uterine healing, postpartum recovery, and rebuilding strength after delivery.

Why is Qi replenishment important after childbirth?

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, childbirth naturally consumes a significant amount of Qi. Supporting healthy Qi helps restore energy, promote healthy organ function, improve circulation, and assist the body's natural healing process during postpartum recovery.

Can retained placenta residue affect postpartum recovery?

Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that retained postpartum residue may contribute to Blood Stasis, slowing the body's natural recovery process. Healthy circulation and proper elimination of residual postpartum material have traditionally been considered important for restoring balance after childbirth.

How long should I take Postpartum Formula?

Every individual is different. Recovery depends on factors such as overall health, postpartum recovery, constitution, and individual wellness goals. Some individuals choose to use Postpartum Formula during the early postpartum period, while others continue use until they feel their recovery is complete. Can Postpartum Formula be used year-round?

Postpartum Formula is traditionally intended for use during the postpartum recovery period following childbirth. The duration of use varies depending on individual recovery needs and wellness goals.

What makes Silkie Herbs Postpartum Formula different?

Silkie Herbs formulas are rooted in five generations of traditional herbal practice. Each formula is based on classical Traditional Chinese Medicine principles and uses carefully selected medicinal herbs prepared as traditional honey-bound herbal pills. We do not use capsules, compressed tablets, artificial fillers, synthetic binders, or unnecessary additives. Every batch is manufactured in the United States and undergoes rigorous quality testing to support consistency, purity, and authenticity.

Why does Traditional Chinese Medicine focus on Blood and Qi after childbirth?

Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that childbirth naturally consumes both Blood and Qi. Replenishing these vital substances while supporting healthy circulation is considered essential for postpartum healing, uterine recovery, energy restoration, emotional balance, and overall wellness.

Can postpartum recovery affect energy levels?

Yes. Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes that many individuals experience temporary fatigue after childbirth because Blood and Qi have been depleted. Supporting Blood nourishment and Qi replenishment has traditionally been an important part of postpartum care.

Can Postpartum Formula be taken daily?

Many individuals choose to take Postpartum Formula daily during the postpartum recovery period. Consistent use is often preferred when supporting healthy uterine recovery, Blood nourishment, Qi replenishment, circulation, and overall postpartum wellness according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles.

What foods help support postpartum recovery?

Many practitioners recommend a balanced diet that includes warm cooked meals, quality protein, bone broth, iron-rich foods, cooked vegetables, whole grains, adequate hydration, and regular meals. Traditional Chinese Medicine often emphasizes nourishing, easily digested foods to support Blood production, Qi recovery, and healthy postpartum healing.

Why are Silkie Herbs formulas made as honey-bound pills?

Silkie Herbs uses traditional honey-bound herbal pills rather than capsules or compressed tablets. Pure honey acts as a natural binding agent and has traditionally been used in Chinese herbal medicine to harmonize formulas and support digestion. This method allows us to avoid many of the synthetic fillers, binders, lubricants, and flow agents commonly found in modern supplements.

Are Silkie Herbs formulas third-party tested?

Yes. Silkie Herbs performs testing throughout the production process, from raw herb verification to finished product testing. This includes screening for identity, purity, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbial contaminants to help ensure quality and consistency.

Where are Silkie Herbs products made?

Silkie Herbs formulas are manufactured and packaged in the United States. Each formula is produced under strict quality standards while following traditional Chinese herbal principles and preparation methods.

What makes traditional Chinese herbal formulas different from single-herb supplements?

Traditional Chinese herbal formulas are carefully balanced combinations of herbs designed to work together according to classical TCM principles. Rather than relying on a single ingredient, each herb serves a specific role within the formula to promote balance, harmony, and overall wellness.

Why does Silkie Herbs use traditional herbal preparation methods?

Many herbs are traditionally processed using methods known as Pao Zhi (炮製), which may include roasting, steaming, honey-frying, wine-frying, fermenting, or aging. These preparation methods have been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine to refine the properties of herbs and support their traditional functions.
