Diet and Lifestyle Tips for Constipation & Bowel Regularity

According to traditional Chinese herbal principles, healthy bowel movements depend on proper digestive function, adequate intestinal moisture, smooth movement of Qi, and the body's ability to move waste through the intestines. Irregular eating habits, excessive rich foods, inadequate hydration, internal Heat, and digestive stagnation may contribute to constipation, abdominal bloating, fullness, and irregular bowel movements.

For best results:

  • Eat regularly portioned meals three times daily at consistent times
  • Choose warm, freshly prepared, easily digested meals whenever possible
  • Drink lukewarm water regularly throughout the day to support hydration and intestinal moisture
  • Stay physically active with regular walking, stretching, Tai Chi, Qigong, or other gentle movement to support healthy digestion and bowel regularity
  • Develop a consistent daily bowel routine and avoid repeatedly ignoring the natural urge to have a bowel movement
  • Allow at least 2½ to 3 hours between your last meal and bedtime
  • Prioritize adequate rest and maintain a consistent sleep schedule, ideally going to bed around 10:30 PM and sleeping between approximately 11 PM and 7 AM
  • Protect the body from excessive cold, drafts, and prolonged direct air conditioning when appropriate for your individual pattern

To support healthy digestion and regular bowel movements, it is recommended to limit:

  • Excessive raw or uncooked vegetables and fruits when digestion is weak
  • Excess sweets and sugary foods
  • Greasy, oily, and deep-fried foods
  • Excess dairy products
  • Pungent, heavily seasoned, or excessively spicy foods
  • Pickled and heavily preserved foods
  • Burnt or heavily charred meats
  • Smoking and tobacco products
  • Alcohol and excessive coffee
  • Cold or iced beverages, including iced smoothies

Foods traditionally considered supportive for digestive and bowel health include warm cooked vegetables, soups, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, squash, pears prepared warm or cooked, whole grains, and other nourishing foods appropriate for the individual's digestive pattern.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, constipation may develop from different underlying patterns, including intestinal Heat, Qi stagnation, insufficient intestinal moisture, or digestive weakness. Supporting regular digestion and elimination therefore involves more than simply stimulating a bowel movement. The underlying pattern, diet, hydration, activity level, and daily habits should also be considered.

Consistent meal timing, adequate hydration, regular movement, proper rest, and balanced food choices are important foundations for supporting bowel regularity, comfortable digestion, and long-term digestive wellness.

How to Take Constipation Relief Supplement

Adults or teenagers may take 3–10 pills once or twice daily with warm water as needed, or as directed by a qualified healthcare practitioner. If taking medications or other supplements, allow at least 2 hours before or after using this product.

Healthy bowel regularity is influenced by many factors, including hydration, diet, digestive function, physical activity, stress, and daily bowel habits. Individual response may vary depending on the underlying pattern and degree of digestive stagnation.

For best results, use as directed while maintaining regular meals, adequate hydration, and healthy daily bowel habits. Because this formula contains traditionally downward-draining herbs, it should be used according to individual need rather than as a general long-term daily wellness formula unless directed by a qualified practitioner.

A Proven, Research-Backed Constipation Relief Formula

Modern research on traditional herbs commonly used in constipation formulas, particularly Angelica Root (Dang Gui), Thorowax Root (Chai Hu), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Sheng Ma), and Prepared Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao), has explored their effects on intestinal motility, bowel regularity, gastrointestinal function, and digestive balance. A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine evaluated a traditional Chinese herbal formula containing Chai Hu, Sheng Ma, Zhi Gan Cao, and Dang Gui in adults with functional constipation and reported improvements in bowel movement frequency and constipation-related outcomes.

Additional research published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology has examined Angelica sinensis (Dang Gui) and ligustilide, one of its major bioactive constituents, for functional constipation, including effects related to intestinal motility and colonic mucus secretion. A systematic review of traditional herbal formulas for constipation-predominant digestive patterns has also examined formulas containing herbs such as Bupleurum (Chai Hu), Angelica (Dang Gui), and Licorice (Gan Cao), with research exploring bowel movements, intestinal peristalsis, abdominal fullness, and gastrointestinal function.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, constipation may develop when Heat and dryness affect the intestines, Qi becomes stagnant, or the normal movement of the Large Intestine is impaired. Herbs within this formula are traditionally combined to promote the movement of Qi, address intestinal dryness and stagnation, relieve abdominal fullness, and support regular bowel elimination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Constipation Relief used for?

Constipation Relief is traditionally used in Chinese herbal practice to support regular bowel movements and healthy intestinal elimination. It is commonly used by individuals experiencing acute or chronic constipation, hard or dry stools, infrequent bowel movements, abdominal bloating, fullness, difficulty passing stool, and irregular bowel movements associated with patterns of intestinal Heat and stagnation.

How does Traditional Chinese Medicine view constipation?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), constipation is not considered a single pattern. It may develop from intestinal Heat, Qi stagnation, insufficient fluids, Blood deficiency, Qi deficiency, Yang deficiency, or other underlying imbalances. Constipation accompanied by hard, dry stools, abdominal fullness, thirst, or Heat signs is traditionally approached differently from constipation caused by weakness or Cold.

What is intestinal Heat constipation in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Intestinal Heat constipation is a TCM pattern commonly associated with hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass, abdominal fullness or distention, thirst, a sensation of Heat, dry mouth, stronger breath odor, darker urine, and infrequent bowel movements. Traditional formulas for this pattern focus on clearing accumulated Heat while promoting bowel movement and elimination.

Who may benefit from Constipation Relief?

Individuals experiencing occasional or recurring constipation, hard or dry stools, infrequent bowel movements, abdominal bloating, fullness, difficult elimination, or a feeling that the bowels are not completely empty may choose Constipation Relief when these symptoms correspond with the appropriate Traditional Chinese Medicine pattern.

Can Constipation Relief be used for acute constipation?

Constipation Relief may be used for short-term episodes of constipation when the symptoms correspond with the formula's traditional pattern. Acute constipation may involve hard or dry stool, difficulty passing stool, abdominal fullness, bloating, or several days without a normal bowel movement.

Can Constipation Relief be used for chronic constipation?

Chronic constipation can develop from several different underlying patterns in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Constipation Relief may be appropriate when recurring constipation is associated with intestinal Heat, dryness, stagnation, abdominal fullness, and difficult elimination. Long-standing constipation should be evaluated according to the individual's complete TCM pattern rather than stool frequency alone.

Can Constipation Relief help with hard, dry stools?

This formula is traditionally used for constipation characterized by hard, dry, or difficult-to-pass stools. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, dry stool may be associated with accumulated Heat and insufficient moisture within the intestines, which can interfere with comfortable and regular elimination.

Can Constipation Relief help with bloating and abdominal fullness?

Constipation and retained stool may be accompanied by abdominal bloating, pressure, distention, and fullness. Traditional Chinese Medicine may associate these symptoms with stagnation and impaired movement through the digestive system. Constipation Relief is formulated to support elimination and help restore normal bowel movement when used for the appropriate pattern.

Why can constipation cause bloating and fullness?

When bowel movements become infrequent or stool remains in the intestinal tract longer than normal, individuals may experience abdominal fullness, pressure, gas, and bloating. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this may also reflect stagnation that interferes with the normal movement and descending function of the digestive system.

What causes irregular bowel movements according to Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine recognizes several possible causes of irregular bowel movements, including Heat accumulation, Qi stagnation, digestive weakness, insufficient fluids, Blood deficiency, and Yang deficiency. Because different patterns can produce constipation, identifying whether the stool is hard, dry, difficult, infrequent, or accompanied by bloating and other symptoms helps determine the appropriate herbal approach.

What is the difference between occasional constipation and chronic constipation?

Occasional constipation may occur temporarily because of changes in diet, travel, routine, hydration, activity, or other short-term factors. Chronic constipation is persistent or repeatedly returns over time. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, recurring constipation may indicate an underlying pattern that should be addressed rather than focusing only on producing a bowel movement.

How often should a healthy bowel movement occur?

Bowel habits naturally vary between individuals, but regular, comfortable elimination without excessive straining, significant dryness, pain, or persistent feelings of incomplete evacuation is generally an important sign of digestive health. Traditional Chinese Medicine also considers stool consistency, color, odor, accompanying symptoms, and the individual's overall pattern rather than frequency alone.

What is Qi stagnation and how can it affect bowel movements?

Qi stagnation refers to impaired or restricted movement of Qi according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Because normal digestive function depends on proper movement and descending of Qi, stagnation may contribute to abdominal fullness, bloating, pressure, difficulty passing stool, or a sensation that the bowel movement is incomplete.

Why is intestinal moisture important for healthy bowel movements?

Adequate intestinal moisture helps stool remain soft enough to move comfortably through the digestive tract. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, excessive Heat may consume body fluids and contribute to dry, hard stools. Supporting proper fluid balance and addressing the underlying pattern are therefore important considerations for healthy elimination.

How long should I take Constipation Relief?

Every individual is different. The appropriate length of use depends on the type of constipation, severity of symptoms, bowel movement pattern, diet, overall constitution, and underlying Traditional Chinese Medicine pattern. Because this formula is designed to actively promote elimination rather than serve simply as a general digestive tonic, it should be used according to the label directions or a qualified practitioner's recommendation.

Can I take Constipation Relief with other Silkie Herbs formulas?

Many Silkie Herbs formulas are designed to complement one another when selected according to the individual's Traditional Chinese Medicine pattern. Constipation may occur together with digestive weakness, bloating, Heat, Qi stagnation, or other imbalances, so additional formulas may be recommended depending on the individual's symptoms and constitution.

When is the best time to take Constipation Relief?

Constipation Relief should be taken according to the directions on the label or your practitioner's recommendation. Individual recommendations may vary depending on bowel movement frequency, stool consistency, digestive symptoms, diet, and the underlying Traditional Chinese Medicine pattern.

What herbs are included in Constipation Relief?

Constipation Relief contains a carefully selected herbal blend of Black Cohosh Rhizome, Thorowax Root, Glauber's Salt, Angelica Root, and Prepared Licorice Root. These ingredients are combined according to traditional herbal principles to support bowel movement, healthy elimination, digestive balance, and the movement of Qi while addressing the underlying pattern associated with constipation, fullness, and stagnation.

What is the traditional role of Glauber's Salt in constipation formulas?

Glauber's Salt has traditionally been used in Chinese herbal medicine in formulas intended to soften hardness and promote bowel elimination. It is particularly associated with constipation patterns involving hard, dry stool and internal accumulation. Because it has a more direct bowel-moving action, formulas containing Glauber's Salt should be used according to the recommended directions.

What is the role of Angelica Root in the formula?

Angelica Root has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is traditionally associated with nourishing and moving Blood while supporting intestinal moisture. Within a balanced formula, it complements herbs selected to address dryness, stagnation, and difficult bowel movements.

Can Constipation Relief be used year-round?

Constipation Relief is intended for use when its specific digestive and bowel pattern is present rather than automatically as an everyday year-round wellness supplement. Individuals with recurring or chronic constipation should consider the underlying TCM pattern and adjust diet, lifestyle, and herbal support accordingly.

Can Constipation Relief be taken daily?

Constipation Relief should be used according to the directions on the label or your practitioner's recommendation. Because the formula contains ingredients traditionally used to actively promote bowel elimination, it should not be treated in the same way as a general daily digestive or wellness supplement. The need for continued use depends on the individual's bowel pattern and underlying imbalance.

What foods can help support regular bowel movements?

A balanced diet with regular meals, appropriate hydration, cooked vegetables, and foods suited to the individual's digestive constitution may help support healthy bowel regularity. Traditional Chinese Medicine also considers whether constipation is caused by Heat, dryness, stagnation, deficiency, or Cold before recommending specific dietary changes.

Can diet and lifestyle contribute to constipation?

Yes. Irregular meals, inadequate fluid intake, limited physical activity, changes in routine, travel, and certain dietary habits may affect bowel regularity. Traditional Chinese Medicine also considers the effects of excessive rich, greasy, spicy, drying, or difficult-to-digest foods when evaluating constipation accompanied by Heat, fullness, and stagnation.

Why is regular elimination important in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine considers proper elimination an important part of maintaining digestive balance. The Large Intestine is responsible for receiving waste and supporting its downward movement and elimination. When this process becomes impaired, constipation, bloating, abdominal fullness, dryness, and other digestive symptoms may develop.

What makes Silkie Herbs Constipation Relief different?

Silkie Herbs formulas are rooted in five generations of traditional herbal practice. Each formula is developed according to Traditional Chinese Medicine principles rather than relying on a single trendy ingredient. Carefully selected herbs are combined to address specific TCM patterns and support the body's natural balance while maintaining the integrity of traditional herbal formulation.

Why does Traditional Chinese Medicine use multiple herbs for constipation?

Traditional Chinese herbal formulas use combinations of herbs because constipation can involve more than one mechanism at the same time. One ingredient may promote elimination while another supports intestinal moisture, moves Qi, nourishes Blood, harmonizes the formula, or addresses the underlying pattern. This balanced approach is a fundamental principle of traditional Chinese herbal formulation.

What makes traditional Chinese herbal formulas different from single-ingredient constipation supplements?

Traditional Chinese herbal formulas are designed around patterns rather than a single symptom. Instead of viewing every case of constipation as identical, TCM considers stool consistency, frequency, abdominal sensations, thirst, temperature, digestion, energy, and other signs when determining the underlying imbalance. Multiple herbs are then combined according to their complementary traditional functions.

Are Silkie Herbs formulas third-party tested?

Yes. Silkie Herbs performs testing throughout the production process, from raw herb verification to finished product testing. This includes screening for identity, purity, heavy metals, pesticides, and microbial contaminants to help ensure quality and consistency.

Where are Silkie Herbs products made?

Silkie Herbs formulas are manufactured and packaged in the United States. Each formula is produced under strict quality standards while following traditional Chinese herbal principles and preparation methods.

Why does Silkie Herbs use traditional herbal preparation methods?

Many Chinese herbs are traditionally processed using methods known as Pao Zhi (炮製). Depending on the herb, preparation may include roasting, steaming, honey-frying, wine-frying, fermenting, or other traditional processing techniques. These methods have been used for centuries to refine the traditional properties of medicinal herbs and their roles within balanced herbal formulas.

Silkie
Silkie Pills
